FAQ
Why do you need my mobile number and Facebook/Twitter credentials?
We need your mobile number so that we can identify you when you SMS updates to us, and we need your Twitter/Facebook credentials to send those updates. We take privacy very seriously, and we hate spam as much as you do. Your personal details will never be shared with 3rd parties.
Do I need both a Twitter and a Facebook account to sign up?
No. You can sign up with just your Twitter account, just your Facebook account, or both of your accounts!
What if I only want to send updates to one account?
You can prefix your updates with “tw ” or “dm ” or “d “to send it only to Twitter, or “fb ” to send it only to Facebook. If you don’t include a prefix on your message, it will go to whichever Twitter/Facebook accounts you have registered with Chime.
I am on Telstra/Optus/3/whatever, can I use Chime?
YES! You can use Chime from any Australian mobile phone.
What about DMs?
You can certainly do both with Chime in the same way you’re used to doing so with Twitter. For example to DM hello to @getchime you would send an SMS to Chime like “dm getchime hello”. Starting the message with ‘d’ or ‘dm’ will send a direct message to Twitter.
I’ve already signed up for Chime, but I want to change my Twitter/Facebook username.
No problem. Just sign-up again from the home page with your desired Twitter account, and we’ll update the Twitter/Facebook credentials used with your mobile number. We only use the most recently signed-up Twitter/Facebook account details with your mobile number. We’ll erase the old account information after you complete the new sign-up.
What’s the mobile number to send updates to?
The Chime number is 0429558117. After you register, just SMS your update to this number and it will automatically be posted to your Twitter/Facebook account. Please note that we’ll only reply to your SMS if there’s a problem, so if you don’t get a response it means it worked!
Is Chime available outside Australia?
Yes, you CAN use Chime internationally. We don’t restrict access. It just might cost you a bit more to send SMS to the Australian Chime number. We will be working on having Chime up and running directly as an international service in other countries soon! Do check back, or follow us on Twitter for updates!
Do I have to pay to send updates?
You pay only whatever it usually costs you to text another Australian mobile. No additional fees from us, Chime is a FREE service!
